The Mustangs Wrestlers had their best ever results at the WAC League Finals on Saturday, February 8. The total medal count and overall Boys and Girls places were the best results at the league tournaments since MHHS first fielded a wrestling team. The Girls finished the WAC League tournament 3rd overall in team scoring despite missing wrestlers in 7 out of 14 weight classes. This comes after finishing 2nd overall, 6-1 in the WAC dual meet schedule. At the WAC League tournament, Senior Michelle Poland took 1st place and All-League honors in the 116 pound weight class, Senior Ramona Jimenez took 1st place and All-League honors in the 160 pound weight class. Both wrestlers also finished the dual meet schedule undefeated. Senior Jessica Emerson took 2nd place at 189 pounds, Sophomores Ihina Nath at 101 pounds and Abby Arunkumar at 126 pounds, each took 3rd place at the league tournament. Freshman Veronika Emerson took 4th place at 111 pounds and Sophomore Kalaynah Gooden took 6th place at 121 pounds.
For the Varsity Boys, the team finished 4th overall in team scoring at the league tournament despite missing 6 out of 14 weight classes. Senior Jaiden Leus took 1st place and All-League honors in the 170 pound weight class. Seniors Ryan Strout-Hearick at 126 pounds and Cannon Waters at 132 pounds, each took second place, as did Junior Dominic Childress at 285 pounds. Sophomore Ek Chan took 3rd place at 113 pounds and Sophomore Silverio Jimenez took 4th place at 106 pounds. The top 4 placers in each weight class will move on to the Divisional Tournament. Senior Isaac Magpoc took 5th place in the 152 pound weight class and Junior Kaleo Aquino took 5th place in the 138 pound weight class. They will both be first alternates for the Divisional Tournament.
For the JV Boys, Junior Cole Merrill at 126 pounds and Sophomore Timothy Huynh at 132 pounds both took 1st place.
