Mountain House Girls Basketball earned hard fought victories on opening night at Mountain House High School.
The Girls Varsity squad defeated Beyer High School (Modesto) 45-36 in a hard fought game. Sophomore Sariah Fobert and senior Maya Gorman led the way for the Mustangs as they sprinted out to a 30-11 halftime lead. Beyer fought hard, limiting the Mustangs to 15 total points in the 2nd half to get into earshot before Fobert hit a 3 pointer late in the 4th quarter to seal the victory. Fobert was named player of the game with 20 pts, 6 rebs, and 3 key blocks. Gorman had a solid game with a double double of 10 pts, 10 rebs, and 3 steals.
Freshman Niara Mangrum had a solid Varsity debut with 8 pts and 9 rebounds, with fellow freshman Lauren Estrella getting her first Varsity points with a 3 pointer in the 2nd quarter. Coach Reno Ursal started 4 seniors–Gorman, Hannah Young, Reilyn Ursal and Alex Emerson–along with Fobert, signifying the appreciation to the senior class for enduring a difficult senior year during the pandemic.
Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph welcomed West High (Tracy CA) to Mustang territory and played two competitive games.
JV defeated West 35-29 in a competitive game led by sophomore Evangeline Stanley’s 8 points. Head Coach Jodi Larson noted the team’s defense, rebound and aggressiveness was a great sign for the rest of the season.
The Mustangs Frosh/Soph squad defeated West 47-18 led by player of the game Safa Muneer with 16 points, including 2 three-point makes. Head Coach Darren Watson had 5 players suit up, making this victory even more impressive.
Overall, a great start to the season for the Mustangs Girls Basketball program. The Varsity girls will travel to Beyer High in Modesto Friday April 23, 2021 for the 2nd game of the league back-to-back. Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph will prepare for Lathrop next week.
