The Mountain House Mustangs Girls Varsity squad visited Lathrop High School and defeated the Spartans 37-24 in the 2nd game of the home and home between the two schools.
Mountain House started off sluggish but held the Spartans scoreless in the first quarter. Sophomore Sariah Fobert’s aggressiveness around the basket led to 4 free throws and a put back that gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the Spartans showed more life, but Mustangs senior Maya Gorman led the charge with 4 points. Juniors Elani Khoe and Sophia Gonzalez contributed 2 points each that sparked the Mustangs to a 15-6 halftime lead.
In the 3rd quarter, both teams battled each other in a dogfight with each rebound and loose ball contested. The Spartans pulled within 4 points until Coach Ursal called timeout to help the girls gather their focus. Once play resumed, the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run led by sophomore Cayla Alvarez’s layup make, freshman Niara Mangrum’s nice drive to the bucket and Fobert’s fast break layup.
In the 4th quarter, the Mustangs put the game away with a 14-7 run led by Fobert’s 6 points in the quarter and sophomore Taylor McCutchen’s strong rebounding. Alvarez’s intensity in the quarter helped keep the girls focused on being relentless offensively and defensively.
The Mustangs were led by Fobert’s 13 pts, senior Maya Gorman’s 10 pts, Alvarez’s 4 pts and McCutchen’s timely 3 pts in the 2nd half.
The Mustangs Junior Varsity squad played a competitive game, but lost 43-40 when the Spartans hit a game-winning 3 pointer with less than 3 seconds left in the game. Junior Varsity falls to 3-1, but continue to grow and improve every week.
Mountain House Girls Varsity improves to 3-1 on the season. Their next test will be a home and home against the always competitive Grace Davis High (Modesto CA) away on Thursday May 6th, then at home in Mountain House on Friday May 7th.
