Multiple Teams · Girls Varsity basketball’s rally not enough in 35-36 loss against Lathrop

The Mountain House Mustangs and Lathrop Spartans Girls Varsity basketball squads battled it out in the first of a home and home, with Lathrop edging the Mustangs 36-35.

The Mustangs climbed uphill the entire game as the Spartans kept the pressure on. Both teams had slow starts, with Lathrop leading at the end of the 1st quarter 6-3. The slugfest continued in the 2nd quarter as both teams locked down on defense, with the score 12-10 Spartans at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, Spartans junior Kierstin Constantino hit two 3 pointers that sparked them to a 29-19 lead. The Mustangs brought the heat in the 4th quarter, coming back from 10 down to tie the game 35-35. The Spartans took a 36-35 lead on a free throw, leaving the Mustangs down 1 point with the ball with 8 seconds left in the game. The Spartans played tight defense when Maya Gorman drove the length of the floor before passing to freshman Niara Mangrum. Two Spartans defenders converged forcing a held ball as time ran out.

Mustangs sophomore Cayla Alvarez had a nice Varsity debut with 11 points, 17 rebounds her first career double double. Fellow sophomore Sariah Fobert had 8 points, 9 rebounds on her 16th birthday. Mangrum had 6 pts, 11 rebounds and fellow freshman Lauren Ela Estrella contributed 6 points key points in the 4th quarter.

The Mustangs Junior Varsity girls squad defeated Lathrop in a competitive game, led by sophomore Sophie Fletcher and Evangeline Stanley. Junior Varsity Mustangs are now 3-0 in the 2020-21 season.

Mountain House and Lathrop JV and Varsity girls go at it again for the 2nd game of the home and home on Friday April 30, 2021 at Lathrop High. Mustangs JV hopes to extend their winning streak to 4 games while Mountain House Varsity hopes to bounce back in what is expected to be another competitive contest against Lathrop.
